A lot of chatter on the topic of Cape May is about the food. It’s no wonder because there are tons of fantastic family owned restaurants, farms, and shops producing their own goods like peanut butter, honey, and olive oil and recently…bread.
This is a “Knead-To-Know” Treasure in Cape May
You “knead” to find out about Elizabeth Degener, who, also known as The Bread Lady, has escalated the food hype in Cape May. They’re lining up for her home crafted breads, sold at roadside.
Elizabeth spent a lot of time in Europe, and learned how to bake bread using a clay oven while staying in Germany. All week she spends time rolling the dough for the weekend and shaping it, then begins baking before dawn making about 100 loaves each day. She sets up her stand every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning in the summer. Some of the flavors Elizabeth bakes for customers to choose from include rosemary and thyme, raisin and spice, pumpernickel, sesame and sunflower seed, and traditional baguettes. She is one of the many successful entrepreneurs in Cape May, providing visitors and residents something very unique.
